Connie – Conveyancing 

We retained Francis LAU as our lawyer to purchase my present property. In the hot market, it is so easy for a layman to be trapped. In fact, before we purchased our present property, we had exchanged our contract for another property. We retained Francis LAU as our lawyer just before we  had signed the contract. The cooling-off period was extended so that our lawyer could do the search and inquiries. Francis LAU discovered that the tenancy was not disclosed and we ran the risk of having the tenants still in the house after settlement. Francis negotiated for us with the Vendor and rescinded the contract as a result. We would have lost our initial deposit, which was 0.25% of the purchase price but Francis fought for us the mis-description of the contract. Finally, the Vendor had to agree to refund to us the initial deposit.

We then looked for the present property but Francis LAU had already agreed that he would treat the two transactions as one deal and charge us for only one legal fee.

Jenny – Family Law Matter / Insolvency

My husband and I had been separated and lived apart for years but we had not divorced formally. Without proper legal advice, my husband declared bankruptcy. The Trustee of Bankruptcy discovered that our matrimonial home was under our joint names. He issued a letter of demand to me and asked me to sell the house. They requested me to use part of the sale money to pay off the debt of my husband because my husband was entitled to half of the house’s value. I did not agree because it was I who had been repaying the mortgage and the house in fact wholly belongs to me.

I contacted the Bar Association and they referred me to a counsel. The counsel specialised in trust law and he referred me to Francis LAU as family law was at issues. 

Francis analysed my documents and constructed my contributions to the value of the matrimonial home. He examined my bank statements over many years and other related documents. He replied to the Trustee of Bankruptcy. Since then, the Trustee of Bankruptcy no longer chases me and I lead my life peaceably.
